French has been part of my life since I was little. I was born in Toronto to Swiss parents from the French-speaking part of Switzerland (Jura). I had to learn French early to communicate with my family in Switzerland. I moved to Belgium at age 10 and attended French-language primary and secondary school in Brussels.
I’ve always been fascinated by language. In addition to French and English, I’ve studied Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch and Turkish. I’ve always asked myself: what is the best way to learn a language and what is the best way to teach one, what works best for what kind of student? Is Chomsky’s Universal Grammar innate? Or is something more complex at work?
I have a BA (Honors) in English Literature from Carleton University in Ottawa.
After university, I returned to Belgium where I attended the Centre Européen de Traduction Littéraire (CETL) for literary translation for two years. While there, I also taught translation for international policy and English grammar at the Haute Ecole de Bruxelles (HEB).
I later obtained an MFA in Comparative Literature and Literary Translation from the University of Iowa (Dissertation: Translating B-17 G by Pierre Bergounioux: Cultural Aspects of Translation).
I’ve been a French to English translator for the past 25 years. I’ve worked on a wide range of topics including insurance, EU policy, banking and finance, marketing, and NGO and development policy documents.
Prior to becoming a translator, I worked in the software industry, first in customer service and later in business development in Belgium, France and other European countries.
I’ve taught French at the University of Portland, the Alliance française d’Atlanta, Kennesaw State University, and the University of Iowa.
